Crossroads Teen Centre offers Christian-based recreational, social and educational programmes, projects and activities in a safe and stable environment. We equip high school learners to better meet the challenges of the world so that they can maximize their potential and confidently lead the way for their peers to experience the same.
In an attempt to address the concerns of teenagers in the Richards Bay/ Empangeni area of KwaZuluNatal, South Africa, the Empangeni Methodist Church and Christian Social Services implemented a research study, TEENS TALK 2007, in the latter part of 2007. The Crossroads opened its doors to teenagers in August 2009, providing a facility based in Empangeni that would address many of the needs and issues of teenagers. This research study was implemented on just under 4000 high school learners, in an attempt to identify the social, emotional, spiritual and physical concerns of teenagers. This research clearly indicated the need for such a centre.
The premises are located in Norman Tedder Lane, Empangeni. The 450m² premises consist of a hall that can accommodate approximately 70 people as well as 14 rooms, 3 toilets and a kitchenette. The centre offers four nuclear activities which are available to the teens on a daily basis, namely: a quiet room for studying, a chill room with a tuck-shop where the teens can socialize, a music room for music practice and a computer room for research and projects. Our interventions are divided into 4 main groups; Gr82Gr8ter which focuses on Gr 8 learners, Matrics Uploaded which focuses on the Gr 12 members, Reshape which encourages overall holistic growth, and Me Myself & I, which assists the members with gender related issues.
